Available Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm
Purpose: Provides welder training in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), delivered by a CWI, in 4-hour blocks (up to 8 hours/day) for industries like construction, pipeline, and maintenance.
Duration: Short courses (e.g., 1-4 days, ~8-32 hours) or part of welding programs.
Target Audience: Businesses or professionals seeking SMAW skills and/or certification for production welding, metal fabrication, and precision welding competencies.
Understanding SMAW:
Learn SMAW basics: manual process using a flux-coated stick electrode and constant-current power supply.
Understand electrode types (e.g., E6010, E7018) and their applications based on flux composition.
Explore uses for mild steel, stainless steel, and cast iron in rugged or outdoor environments.
Equipment and Setup:
Master SMAW equipment: welding machine, electrode holder, ground clamp, and cables.
Select electrodes (e.g., 1/8-inch E7018) and adjust amperage and polarity (DCEP/DCEN) for optimal welds.
Welding Techniques:
Perform fillet/groove welds in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead).
Practice drag/strike techniques (10-20° angle, steady arc length) for consistent bead and penetration.
Safety and PPE:
Use PPE (helmets, gloves, leather jackets, steel-toe boots, glasses) to protect against UV, sparks, and burns.
Manage slag, fumes, and fire hazards per safety protocols.
Weld Quality and Inspection:
Achieve welds meeting Structural Steel Code, guided by CWI expertise.
Address defects (slag inclusions, porosity, arc strikes, incomplete fusion).
Practice slag removal and surface cleaning for quality welds.
Theory: SMAW principles, equipment, electrode selection, and standards, taught by CWI.
Hands-On: Lab-based welding with CWI feedback on technique and quality.
Assessments: Weld tests and evaluations per criteria.
Basic welding knowledge or introductory safety training.
Minimum age (e.g., 18) and physical ability to weld.
Skills Gained: SMAW proficiency for production welding and durable welds.
Certifications: Prepares for code certification testing.
Career Paths: Roles in pipeline, structural welding, or repair welding.
CWI-led training ensures industry-standard SMAW skills.
Suits versatile, portable welding for heavy or outdoor applications.
Managing fume and slag in welding environments.
Ensuring proper electrode storage and weld cleanup.
Troubleshooting SMAW issues (e.g., arc blow, sticking electrodes).
